Good books, especially good dissertations, deserve to be read and engaged with. This is especially true in the digital age. While jurisprudence, legal literature, and other specialist information can already be accessed with just a few clicks in databases or on the Internet, access to legal books is more limited. Precisely because of the ready availability of other sources, there is a danger that readers will no longer seek out printed books, especially when doing so involves long trips to a library, waiting periods for reserved books, and financial costs. However, authors who publish exclusively on the Internet are often not perceived as relevant, or otherwise must pay high Open Access fees.

The publication series digital | recht aims to change this. Guided by the goal of society-oriented science that is as freely accessible as possible, we have united as a team of editors to found the Open Access publication series digital | recht: State and Digital Society.

digital | recht is characterized by four guiding principles:

  • Relevance & Quality: By including select dissertations in the series, we signal that they are excellent dissertations on relevant topics in the law of digitalization.
  • Free Access Culture: For readers, publications are freely available in digital form, at no cost. The publication is also free of charge for authors.
  • Fast & permanent availability: Publications are available on the Internet shortly after their completion. Cooperation with Trier University Library and the German National Library guarantees that this remains the case permanently.
  • Digital & analog: The digital version of a publication can be accessed from anywhere at the touch of a button. Those who would like to hold the publication in their hands or study it in-depth can also purchase physical copies of the book through print-on-demand services.

With our publication model, we assure authors and readers that quality standards will be maintained, and enable both sides to participate in the scientific discourse without substantial personal financial contributions or support from scientific foundations or publication funds.

The series digital | recht: Staat und digitale Gesellschaft (digital | law: state and digital society) is dedicated to the challenges of digitalization for society and the possible reactions and solutions of state and supranational law.
